Place de la Bastille Genius of Liberty on July Column Paris
Genius of Liberty Le GeÃÂnie de la LiberteÃÂ by french sculptor Augustin Alexandre Dumont bronze and patina 1833. Colonne de Juillet, the Column of July dominates the Place de la Bastille. It marks the site of the prison known as the Bastille which was stormed in 1789 at the start of the French Revolution. Gustave Flaubert, in Sentimental Education, compares the statue to a large golden star shining in the east.
