The Castle of Palmela is of Arab origin, with the first fortification probably built around the 9th century, after the conquest of this region to the Visigoths, but where the archaeological studies point to a human occupation since the Neolithic period. It passed to the possession of Portugal in 1190 and underwent successive transformations as a medieval fortress. It is a national monument and obligatory tourist destination in the city of Palmela, district of Setúbal, Portugal, 40 kms south of Lisbon. Palmela is a pleasant city in the Natural Park of Arrábida Mounts.
