Crab creels in the fishing harbour of Kirkwall, capital of Orkney Scotland

Crab and lobster traps or creels are used to bait, lure, and catch crabs for commercial or recreational use. Crabbing or crab fishing is the commercial occupation of fishing for crabs. Different types of traps are used depending on the type of crab being fished for, geographic location, and personal preference. The creels used in Scotland usually consist of a wood, metal or plastic frame surrounded by mesh. A piece of bait, often fish or chum, is placed inside the trap/creel, and the traps are dropped onto the sea floor. A long rope is attached to each trap, at the end of which is a plastic or styrofoam buoy that bears the owner`s license number.
