San Francisco`s Mission District has the highest concentration of murals of any neighborhood in the city, and the one-block long Balmy Alley has the highest concentration in the neighborhood. local artist Maria Galivez, with some local children, started the murals in 1972. The following year, when a couple other woman artist now living on the block, the work grew and expanded. Woman art also became important. Then more people joined. Chicano art and activities art became an integral theme, and even the live bushes were becoming incorporated. Balmy Alley is now as much of a tourist destination as any in San Francisco.
