The American robin is named for the European version, as they both are noted for having a red-orange breast, but that is about all they have in common, and not even in the same families. The American robin is a thrush and the European is an Old World flycatcher. When you heard a bird early in the morning, it may very well be the robin, one of the first in the morning to sing.
