Rich in symbolism that can be traced as far back as 6000 BC, the vibrantly coloured poppy is easily recognised for its unique beauty - but has also been revered and acknowledged as an important, even sacred, cultural symbol across the world. It has medicinal properties, culinary applications, and is also used in the manufacture of opiates. Itââ¬â¢s cultural significance varies but it is most often associated with death, commemoration, sacrifice, resurrection, and rebirth. This association can be traced due to the sedative affect of the poppy seed which is used to make opium. The poppy is well known as symbol of the sacrifice and heroism of the ANZAC soldiers during World War One and is worn on remembrance day. November 11
