As the glaciers retreated 10,000 years ago, mosses, lichens and liverworts, then grasses, low bushes and sparse trees began to cover the slopes. The first bigger trees were birches and pines. This sequence of vegetation recovery can be seen even now on the high hills of England and Scotland.
