Carpenter Bee female digging nest hole

The carpenter bee, so known because it digs holes in wood for its nest, is found worldwide. The bee is borning into a porte chochere made of bald-cypress (Taxodium distichum). This species, Xylocopa virginica, occurs throughout the southeastern United States and farther.
