This species is native to the southern part of the South American continent, from Paraguay and from central and southern Bolivia to Tierra del Fuego; it is a typical species of the plain, although it can reach altitudes up to 1190 meters in the Andes. In the early nineteenth century, a demand for its fur developed called `castorino fur` for commercial purposes. Therefore it became quite rare in its original range.
