The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, also known as the Great Mosque of Córdoba Mezquita de Córdoba and its official ecclesiastical name as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, is an ancient Roman temple which became a church, then a mosque, and in which was later erected a cathedral. It is a major monument of Islamic architecture, witness of the Muslim presence in Spain from the 8th to the 15th century. It is the most accomplished monument of Umayyad art in Córdoba. Converted into a church in the 13th century after the Reconquista by King Ferdinand III of Castile, it has since been the cathedral of the diocese of Córdoba in Spain.
