The Ha Ha was a victorian invention that was basically a sunken ditch, walled on one side and sloped on the other, the top of the wall is level with the grass of the formal gardens, from the house anyone looking across the gardens would not have been aware of the ditch and it would have looked as though the formal gardens where a part of the parkland, built as a barrier to stop animals, mainly deer from straying onto the gardens
