Japanese pine, Pinus pentaphylla, like bonsai. Very slow growth. Distinctive green-blue needles and rough, brown-gray bark. In the spring, it forms new shoots to replace old needles. We plant it in drained but always slightly moist soil. For a beautifully shaped canopy bonsai, young shoots are shortened or trimmed, and the canopy can be cleaned by hand in old or yellow needles in October or November.
