Pitaia is the name given to the fruit of various species of epiphyte cacti of the genera Hylocereus and Selenicereus, native to regions of Central America and Mexico, also cultivated in Israel, Brazil and China. The term `pitaia` means `flaky fruit`. It is also called `dragon fruit` in some languages, such as English and Asian languages. There are three species, all traded for their fruits, which give them the names: the white pitaia pink on the outside and white inside, the yellow pitaia yellow on the outside and white inside and the red pitaia reddish inside and out. As the plant of the pitaia only blooms at night with large white flowers, its flowers are some of the various plants called the `flower of the night`.
