Marching Gentoo penguins returning to their nesting colony, Antarctica

At the beginning of the breeding season, penguins by the thousands march back over sea ice, land and snow to arrive at their nesting sites. They often return to the same site year after year and will rejoin the same mate. This can be seen around the beginning of November each year. They then wait for the snow and ice to melt and build a small mound of pebbles on which they lay 1-3 eggs after a short courtship. Cuverville Island, Antarctica
