The trunk of the salak tree is almost invisible because it is covered by tightly arranged leaf midribs, the midrib and its long spiny leaf stalks The stems of the salak plant are weak and fall easily, the stems can grow rooted shoots themselves, which if allowed to grow on the stems, the shoots can grow into large clumps of salak plants.
