The genus is found in Europe and dispersed in North America. The animals live in meadows, forests, parks and gardens. Their activity period ranges from March to October in Western and Central Europe. Afterwards they go into a cold torpor, which lasts about five months. It is characterized by spherical shells with mostly conspicuous brown bands along the shell. From this banding comes the name of the genus.
