Gothic ruins of Convento do Carmo downtown Lisboa, Portugal. The complex, opened in 1389, was once the main Gothic church in the capital, and which for its greatness and monumentality competed with the Lisbon Cathedral itself, was in ruins due to the 1755 earthquake, having not been rebuilt. It is one of the main testimonies of the catastrophe still visible in the city. Today the ruins are home to the Carmo Archaeological Museum.
