The Blue-eared Kingfisher is a small bird with purple blue patches on the forehead, top of the head, and occipital region of the male. The eyes are yellow, the ears pinnate and the sides of the head purplish blue. The upper back, waist, and tail are bright blue, with dark overheads and short rounded tail feathers that are dark blue or black with blue patches. The undercoat on the wing and shoulder is dark blue, and the undercoat on the wing has diamond blue spots.
