Paesens-Moddergat in the dutch province of Friesland is an authentic fishing village. There are many houses with decorative uilenborden ûleboerd in Frisian, which are carved and brightly painted boards featuring swans that are part of the ridge. These boards have round holes that can be closed off that give owls the opportunity to make nests here: farmers like owls to nest here because they are good catchers of mice! This explains the name owl boards.
