Fanal is a laurisilva forest located in the high plateau of western Madeira island. The forest existing nowadays is much less dense than would have been at its pristine state, having been logged throughout the centuries. However, it still hosts several centuries-old stinkwood trees Ocofea foefens, locally called tils. This tree is an endemic species of Madeira and the neighbouring Canary islands; thus is a Macaronesian endemism.
