The olive, Oleaceae, refers to both the fruit and the tree. Originally from the Mediterranean, has spread through most of the world with a Mediterranean type climate. Olive fruit and oil has been consumed as far back as Biblical times, with the oldest known, still living trees, still in the Mediterranean, over 3,300 years old. It is from the Biblical book of Genesis that the olive branch got the image of peace.
