James L. Flood bought this site in 1902, after the previous building was destroyed by fire. Flood built this to honor his father, James Clair Flood, whose initials are monogramed on the grand entrance. At the time the building opened in 1904, it was the largest building in San Francisco, in terms of square footage, nearly 300,000 square feet on only twelve floors. Thanks to the buildings steel structures and sandstone covering, the building had only very minor damage, from the 1906 earthquake and fire, and just to some of the interior. As seen September 2021.
