Scadoxus is a botanical genus belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. Scadoxus used to be included in the genus Haemanthus, but is now considered a separate genus. Scadoxus was named by Rafinesque, which could mean `glorious umbrella`, which is very fitting. However, in Greek doxus means glorious, but sca means hidden/obscure. The specific name multiflorus in Latin means a lot of flowering, and katharinae is named after Katharine Saunders, a well-known botanical artist. Its former name, Haemanthus, translates to blood flower, from haima, blood, and anthos, a flower Greek, referring to the color of spathe and filaments in some species of Haemanthus.
