Pictured is a 16th Century plate from Valencia, Spain in the Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal. It has a Latin inscription, `Surge Domine`, which translates in English to `Stand up, oh Lord`. This fine kind of earthenware which is glazed and painted with designs is called a faience and is said to have been invented in Faenza, Italy, in 1299.
