Santa Maria della Salute was erected as a sign of gratitude to God for the miraculous deliverance of Venice from the plague. In 1630-31, a terrible disease raged in the city, which claimed the lives of about 100 thousand people. During the epidemic, almost a third of the entire population of Venice died. When the disease receded, the authorities decided to build a new temple in honor of the salvation of the city.
