Amla is a fruit bearing tree. It is a shrub plant about 20 feet to 25 feet tall. Apart from Asia, it is also found in Europe and Africa. Amla plants are found in abundance in the Himalayan region and peninsular India. Its fruits are green, smooth and fleshy. Their fruits are bitter in taste. Most of the sourness is found in the katara. In Sanskrit it is called Amrita, Amritphal, Amalaki, Pancharasa etc., in English `Emblic myribalan` or Indian gooseberry and in Latin `Phyllanthus emblica`. 921 mg in 100 gm juice of amla. Moisture 81.2, Protein 0.5, Fat 0.1, Mineral 0.7, Carbohydrates 14.1, Calcium 0.05, Phosphorus 0.02, Percentage, Iron 1.2 mg, Nicotinic Acid 0.2 mg. are found. Apart from this, elements like gallic acid, tannic acid, sugar glucose, albumin, wood etc. are also found in it.
