Pictured is 'Gloria Victis' a cast of a bronze sculpture by Antonin Mercie on the lawn of a home in Dallas, Texas. Mercie created this sculpture of a winged figure of Fame bearing aloft a fallen soldier in 1874 in response to Franceâs humiliating loss in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Gloria Victis means glory to the vanquished. The uplifting image of heroic sacrifice resonated with the French people, who lauded the monumental sculpture upon its 1874 Paris debut. There exist many castings.
