Gessopalena rises to 654 meters above sea level, on the eastern side of the Maiella: once perched on the rocky spur that dominates the Aventine valley, now lying on the ridge along which the via Peligna winds. Its toponym derives from the Latin gypsum, due to the presence in the area of ??crystalline rocks from which chalk is obtained. In fact, in documents of the XII century it is called Gypsum de domo, in others of the XIII century Terra Gypsi (or Gipsi), in other later ones Lo Gissum but in recent centuries the geographical indication prope Palenam has been added to the original denomination: therefore Gessopalena.
