Back side of Bergenhus Fortress in Bergen, Norway, Europe

The castle was probably founded before 1100 by King Olaf Kyrre. Until 1299 it was the seat of the Norwegian kings, then a military and administrative fortress. Hakon's Great Hall (c. 1260), the Donjon (c. 1270) have been preserved, the castle and fortifications were rebuilt in the 16th century in the Renaissance style. In 1944 the castle was damaged by a ship explosion, repaired.
