Alert eagle sits quietly in the rain in tree in FingerLakes

Bald Eagles are most widespread during winter, where they can be found along coasts, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in many states. This bird was found resting in a rainstorm at Salt Point Nature Preserve on Cayuga Lake in Lansing NY FingerLakes. They winter in large numbers at some lakes and national wildlife refuges such as Montezuma. The Bald Eagle dwarfs most other raptors. It has a heavy body, large head, and long, hooked bill. In flight, a Bald Eagle holds its broad wings flat like a board. Adult Bald Eagles have white heads and tails with dark brown bodies and wings. Their legs and bills are bright yellow. Immature birds have mostly dark heads and tails; their brown wings and bodies are mottled with white in varying amounts. Young birds attain adult plumage in about five years. Haliaeetus leucocephalus Accipitriformes Accipitridae
