Erythrocytes, or red blood cells, vary in their blood group antigens, which are located on the surface of the cell membrane. The main blood group systems include ABO and Rh, with several subtypes within each system. For example, individuals with type A blood have A antigens on their red blood cells, while those with type B blood have B antigens. The presence or absence of certain antigens determines blood compatibility and plays a crucial role in blood transfusions and organ transplantation.
