Monk Bar gatehouse along the York City Walls in York, England
A view of the Monk Bar gatehouse along the city walls in York. The gatehouses were used to restrict traffic into the city, collect tolls and for defense. Most of the York city walls date to the 13th and 14th century although there are Roman ruins along the way.
