Purgatory Chasm State Reservation hiking trail loop in fall in the Berkshires, Massachusetts USA. Purgatory Chasm is natural rock formation that stretches for a quarter-mile and is believed to have been formed with the sudden release of dammed-up glacial meltwater near the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 14,000 years ago, according to the state Department of Conservation and Recreation. It was declared a state reservation in 1919.
