The sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) is a large deciduous tree that belongs to the maple family. The bark of the sycamore maple is grey and smooth when young, but it peels off in irregular patches as the tree ages, revealing an orange inner bark. The peeling bark gives the tree a patchy appearance. A fungus called sooty bark disease can darken and spore the bark. The sycamore maple is often mistaken for the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), another peeling-bark tree of a different kind.
