This stupa was originally a Hindu temple built in the first century AD. Pha That Luang was reconstructed many times, especially after it was destroyed by the Thai invasion in 1828. In 1900, France attempted to design and reconstruct this stupa which, although it failed, finally succeeded in the 1930s. The stupa has three levels, each level reflecting Buddhist doctrine. The height from the ground to the top of the stupa is 44 meters. Inside the stupa is a statue of King Jayavarman VII of the Khmer Empire. To enter Pha That Luang, we only need to pay 5,000 kip or 8,000 rupiah. This stupa is surrounded by a wall to protect it from the hubbub of the city. Pha That Luang is currently a very important national monument for Laos.
