The plant is native to West Africa, Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula, but is widely distributed throughout the world and has won the Award of Merit in Gardening from the Royal Horticultural Society. It inhabits riverbanks and wetlands below 100-300 m. a. s. n. m. It has naturalized in many tropical regions and is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant.
