The Heidebos is a nature reserve in the north of East Flanders and is divided between Moerbeke-Waas and Wachtebeke. It was founded in 1996 and now covers approximately 260 hectares. In 2001, the Heidebos was recognized as a European Habitats Directive area (Natura 2000 area 'Forests and heathlands of Sandy Flanders: eastern part' (BE2300005), which ensures the strictest legal protection of the area. The heath forest is located on a sand ridge and is home to a unique variety of biotopes: coniferous forest, deciduous forest, shrubs, abandoned fields, heath, dry grasslands and lanes.
