Dairy is the leading agricultural industry in New York State, and the state ranks third in the country for milk production. Gambrel roofs are a combination of a double-pitched roof, a style borrowed from early colonial houses, with the frame of an English barn. They were popular with house builders in lower New York State in the late eighteenth century but were not widely used on barns until the beginning of the nineteenth century.
