The Venice Lagoon, or Venetian Lagoon (in Venetian dialect ?aguna de Venesia or ?aguna vèneta), is an Italian lagoon in the Upper Adriatic, located along the central-northern and southern coasts of Veneto.It is the largest lagoon in the Mediterranean Sea, with a surface area of ??approximately 550 km², of which 8% is made up of land (Venice itself and many smaller islands), approximately 11% is permanently composed of water or dredged canals and approximately 80% made up of tidal flats or artificial floodplains.The entire territory was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
