It is a historic sanctuary with a dragon legend. The shrine has been in existence since the first year of the Shitoku era (1384 A.D.) in the Nanbokucho era (the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties). The shrine is called Ryu-ochi (dragon lantern) because of a legend that a dragon offered a sacred lantern every night from the sea off Shinagawa, and Ryu-ochi became a pun on dragon lantern and the area was called Ryudo, and the shrine was named Ryudo Shinmei-gu Shrine.
