Pictured is a dorsal view with wings open of Heliconius melpomene xenoclea perched on a leaf in the butterfly garden of the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens in Fort Worth, Texas. It is one of many subspecies of Heliconius melpomeme, known as the postman buttterly, common postman, or simply postman. Heliconius melpomene exhibits Mullerian mimicry with other Heliconius butterflies such as Heliconius erato in order to warn common predators against attacking.
