Pictured is a side view with wings closed of heliconius ismenius perched on a leaf in the butterfly garden of the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens in Fort Worth, Texas. It is also known as the Ismenius tiger or tiger heliconian and is most commonly called the tiger-striped long wing butterfly. Heliconium ismenius resembles a number of other butterflies, which all share the trait of being toxic and unpalatable and by looking alike they mutually advertise this protective trait, thereby increasing its recognition among predators. This is an example of Mullerian mimicry.
