HallgrÃmur Pétursson, a renowned poet in Iceland, was parish priest here from 1644 to 1651. The main church in Reykjavik, HallgrÃmskirkja, is named after him. The locals carved flat basalt stones from the surrounding area to build the simple but impressive church. They collected driftwood from the nearby shores to decorate the interior.
