Southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) is one of three extant species of wombats. It is found in scattered areas of semiarid scrub and mallee. It is the smallest of all three species and is the state animal of South Australia. Wombats are short-legged, muscular quadrupedal marsupials of the family Vombatidae that are native to Australia. They have small, stubby tail and are adaptable and habitat tolerant. They dig extensive burrow systems with their rodent-like front teeth and powerful claws. One distinctive adaptation of wombats is their backward pouch.
