The first mention of it dates back to 956.In the time of Johann Sebastian Bach it was a small musical center.St. Michael s School, a former Benedictine monastery, housed a Knights Academy while organists of the stature of Georg Böhm (1661-1773) played in the main churches (St. Michael, St. Nicholas and St. John).
