California Wildlife Series - White Lined Sphynx Moth - Hyles Lineata - Anza Borrego Desert

A big fat caterpillar yellow with black lines crawls across the desert sand in search of food in early Spring in Anza Borrego Desert State Park in Borrego Springs California. Hyles lineata, also known as the white-lined sphinx, is a moth of the family Sphingidae. They are sometimes known as a "hummingbird moth" because of their bird-like size and flight patterns. As caterpillars, they have a wide range of color phenotypes but show consistent adult coloration.
