Earliest unofficial graveyard North Beach San Francisco 2

This fenced in lot where people now come to play Basketball started out as the cities earliest, maybe unofficial, graveyard. During the Mexican American war Colonel James Stevenson with his regiment came to California and San Francisco. When one of these soldiers died, in June 1847, he was buried here, soon followed by some 900 other peoples. The cemetery closed sometime in the 1850's, and the bodies haphazardly removed. As seen 5 June 2024.
