Aquilonia is located in Irpinia, at the intersection of Campania, Puglia and Basilicata. It is a very ancient village with a rich history. It seems to have been the last Samnite stronghold to fall. Its ancient name was Carbonara, whose name derives from the presence of minerals that could be burned like coal. On July 23, 1930, a violent earthquake destroyed the country, killing 231 people and injuring a thousand. The town was hastily abandoned and quickly rebuilt on a hill several kilometers away. Today, the old Aquilonia, originally from Carbonara, is a ghostly presence in the valley, which brings back memories of a vanished world.
