village of Massafra, Taranto. Puglia, Italy

Perking atop gentle hills, Massafra features deep ravines and gorges, hiding its most ancient treasures inside natural and carved rocks. The vastness and sheer beauty of its rural settlements earned Massafra the name of “Italy’s Thebaid”. Lying in Taranto’s hinterland, the town is crossed by picturesque karst ravines and gorges. The San Marco ravine cuts in two the entire town, with several crossings and bridges making for a spectacular scenario. Pagan rites and religious cults were spread out here over the centuries, marking Massafra one of the hugest and most fascinating rural areas: from the San Marco ravine visitors can reach the Santa Marina Rural Church, while on the west front there is the Sant’Antonio Abate grotto-church.The town’s historic center sports precious architectures, as the Baroque Sant’Agostino Church and the 17th century Baroque Convent of Saint Benedict.
