On a grey cloudy day, a twisted Hawthorn tree, (Crataegus monogyna) stands in the foreground of the ruins of Pendragon Castle, also known as Mallerstang castle. A twelfth century keep, once owned by Sir Hugh de Morville, who was one of four knights, sent to murder the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Beckett in 1170.
